Lost Dutchman
Mine
Superstition Mountain and the Dutchman's Lost Mine
are synonymous with Arizona lost mine lore. We must first ask ourselves is the Dutchman's
Lost Mine a myth or is there some truth to this lingering tale from the past? Probably the
most difficult part of this question is the separation of fact from fiction. The two have
been so entwined over the past one hundred and twenty years it is almost impossible to
separate the truth from the legend . There are several well documented facts associated
with the story as well as outrageous lies.

Museum Web site.

Saguaro
Ask a child to draw a picture of a cactus and chances are you'll get a reasonable
facsimile of a saguaro cactus. These giants of the cactus world are the quintessential
image of America's southwestern deserts and as such are familiar to one and all, young and
old. However, what many people don't know is that saguaros, which can grow to be 50 feet
tall and weigh more than 8 tons, are native only to the hot lowland regions of the Sonoran
Desert, a finger of which reaches from Mexico into southern Arizona.

Tonto
Visit the detailed Web
Site
Shallow caves overlooking the Tonto Basin in southeastern Arizona shelter masonry ruins
nearly 700 years old. This was home to the prehistoric Salado people, named in the early
20th century after the life-giving Rio Salado, or Salt River. For three centuries, they
made their living from what nature provided in mountainous desert terrain. Today their
culture lives on in two enormous ruins, one containing 40 rooms, clinging precariously to
the cliff hundreds of feet overhead.
